Old Dirty Martin

$950.00

For years, I’ve sold my work at the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts. For years, the public has had a chance to talk to me about these repurposed brass iPhone amplifiers. The top three questions I get are:

  1. How did you come up with this idea?

  2. Where do you get your instruments?

  3. Where’s the saxophone?

I get the saxophone question so much, I have made memes about it. I’ve considered making a big sign for my display that says “NO SAXOPHONES!” See, saxophones aren’t the right shape for conversion to an amplifier. The taper is wrong, and there’s a LOT of holes. Even if the holes are plugged, the inside walls are too turbulent to efficiently harness the sound and focus it properly. So I gave up on the idea years ago.

But sax players are really loyal to their instrument. I’ve sold french horns to trombone players, trombones to trumpet players, tubas to baritone players… But a saxophone player won’t settle for anything but a saxophone. So I go to the arts fest and get requests for saxophone-based amplifiers dozens of times a day.

Well, the day has come. I’ve used a french horn, a car horn, two trumpets, and a trombone to create a smaller smoother horn inside the saxophone body, simultaneously correcting the taper and the turbulence issue. It’s a real feat of engineering! And it’s the very first (and currently the only one) of its kind!

"Old Dirty Martin" is an Analog Tele-Phonographer made from an old Martin saxophone, with parts from two trumpets, a french horn, a trombone, and an antique car horn. It was gently scrubbed to remove the majority of dust and residue, and has been finished with gloss lacquer to preserve it in its current condition.

This piece is truly one-of-a-kind, as it is currently the ONLY saxophone I’ve ever made into an iPhone amplifier. It’s got a really strong midrange sound, and projects loud enough to fill my entire house. It’s going to look great in your music room next to your Maceo Parker records. Or your Cannonball Adderley records. Or your Coltrane records. You can use it to play some Dave Brubeck Quartet, then laugh at your friends when they think Brubeck was the saxophone player. Please please please keep the Kenny G away from this horn. Unless you’re really into Kenny G, in which case, you should be allowed to like the things that you like.

This horn will make the sound from your iPhone or iPad louder and richer, using no electricity, wires, plugs, or batteries. The shape of the horn is enough to add 25 decibels or more! But it's not just about volume, it's about quality of sound as well.

This work of art is hand-made, one-of-a-kind, and was created entirely in America with reclaimed materials.

This piece is shown with a stainless dock that fits every iPhone since the 4, and docks can be made to fit Android or other devices. The dock is easily removed (with no tools required!) and can be replaced for future upgrade.
